Carbon and alloy welded pipes - products of ATM STEEL LLC
Depending on the tasks set, pipelines can be welded or seamless. Each case has its own pros and cons, as well as a number of other features. In some cases, it is not possible to install pipes without welding. Therefore, it is often necessary to choose correctly welded pipes for the installation of a high-quality and reliable pipeline. Most modern metal pipes are made of steel: carbon and alloy. In the first case, the pipe will be stronger, but will lose its plasticity.
Pros and cons of welded pipes
Modern carbon and alloy welded pipes have several key advantages:
Cost. Costs for the production of welded pipes are much lower compared to seamless structures. Accordingly, the installation of such a pipeline will cost much less.
Relatively light weight due to its small thickness. So, the thickness of the pipe walls can be 100 or more times smaller than the diameter of the element. Thus, if the pipeline is laid above ground, then fewer supports are needed to support it.
Large-diameter pipeline installation is possible. For example, for an oil or gas pipeline – it is almost impossible to do this using seamless structures.
Large selection of pipes. So, welded pipes can be not only round, but also square or rectangular.
But, like any other types of structures, welded pipes also have a number of disadvantages. Among them:
Withstanding much less pressure compared to seamless structures. Therefore, it is not possible to use welded pipes in all systems.
Welded pipes do not bend. So, to change the direction of the pipeline, you need to use fittings.
Welded pipes are not made from all types of steel, as they should be well weldable. Because of this, welded structures have less resistance to corrosion. However, the third drawback is easily eliminated by painting or galvanizing the pipes.
Scope of application
The largest number of welded pipes are used in such areas as:
Domestic and industrial pipelines for the supply of water (cold and hot), gas;
Construction of heating mains;
High-pressure trunk oil and gas pipelines;
Etc.
ASTM Standards
It is important to choose correctly not only the length and diameter of the elements of welded pipes, but also the standard of the product. The international system of standards ASTM is convenient because it allows you to make a competent and quick selection of pipes with a simple marking. For example, there are standards for steel pipes that are designed for operation in difficult conditions and exposure to chemicals. There are standards that directly indicate the application temperature of the system: low or high. Etc. All designs presented by our company comply with ASTM standards and are of high quality.
If you have any additional questions, please contact our managers – They will give you detailed advice and help you decide on the choice of welded pipes.
